Farmgate Restaurant & Country Store
In 1983 Maróg O'Brien established Farmgate in Midleton, Co. Cork as a small food shop specialising in local, seasonal, fresh produce. In 1988 it expanded to a larger premises to develop, along with its shop, the now renowned Farmgate Restaurant and Bakery. A generation later Maróg is now joined by her daughter, Sally O'Brien to further continue this well loved concept. Farmgate is supported and loved, particularly by local patrons, and has now become a national and international landmark.
The concept is based on Regional food, supporting in particular local and regional producers. Cheeses are local; duck is free-range; lamb and beef are locally reared; fish is landed at Ballycotton Pier. These are handled simply, with a minimum of fuss and delivered with an honest simplicity.
The Farmgate bakery, situated at the front of the store, starts production very early every morning in order to fill the centre aisle of the shop and the dining room dessert table with a fabulous array of freshly baked cakes, tarts, scones and teabracks, and also to stock the bread basket in the shop with fantastic fresh baked crusty bread.
Meanwhile the kitchen at Farmgate produces a range of take-away products for the shop, including Farmgate chicken liver pâté, cumberland sauce, pickles, soups, chutneys, ready-meals amongst a wealth of other wonderful products sourced locally and regionally such as local apple juice, honey, jams and marmalades, as well as exquisite Good Food Ireland products including Lorge Chocolates from Co. Kerry, Mella's Fudge from West Cork, Ditty’s Oatcakes and Shortbread biscuits Paddy O's Granola from Co. Laois, Gallweys award-winning chocolates to name but a few. The shop at Farmgate also includes a range of international artisan products which cannot be sourced in Ireland, such as olive oil and a wide range of fine wines.
